Foreign arrivals to HCM City surge
The number of foreign visitors to HCM City in the first eight months of the year was up 14 per cent year-on-year to 1.93 million, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said last Friday. Total revenue from tourism is estimated at around VND9.34 trillion (US$490 million), more than 21 per cent up.

Bottled-water producers fail to meet standards
The Food Hygiene and Safety Department inspected bottled-water establishments in 12 provinces and cities, including HCM City and Ha Noi, in June and July and found that 80 per cent of them failed to conform to hygiene and quality standards.
Lax oversight by local authorities and the small scale of production were the main causes, said Nguyen Van Nhien, head of the department's inspectorate.

Schools, colleges enroll 21.8 million students
There are nearly 21.8 million students in schools and colleges this year, the Ministry of Education and Training reported last Friday.
More than 3.6 million children are in nursery schools, 15.2 million in primary and high schools, 820,000 in vocational high schools, 700,000 in colleges, and 1.5 million in universities.

City to get five more private notary offices
The HCM City People's Committee last Friday approved the establishment of five more private notary offices in Binh Chanh, Nha Be and Hoc Mon Districts.
The Binh Hung, Tan Tao and An Lac notary offices will be located in Binh Chanh. The Phu My Hung office is in Nha Be and the Dat Viet office is in Hoc Mon.

Dak Lak helps residents replace old housing
The Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Dak Lak has almost no dilapidated and temporary houses, according to the province People's Committee.
Under the Government's Decisions 134 and 167 on providing housing to ethnic minority and poor families, the province has helped local people build and repair more than 23,000 houses.
