Bottled water makers flout quality standards

Following inspections of bottled-water units in 12 provinces and cities in the last two months, the Food Hygiene and Safety Department found 25 out of 31 of them failing to conform to hygiene and quality standards.

The most common problems were lack of hygiene, labelling violations, and flouting advertising regulations.

Out of 38 samples from 31 plants, 13 were found to contain bacteria that cause diarrhoea and other intestinal problems.

The department blamed the problems on manual and small scale of production.
