HCM CITY — Pop star Cam Van, well-known in Viet Nam for her charming voice, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of her singing career with a concert in HCM City on Sunday evening.
The concert titled Van will feature love ballads and patriotic songs made popular by the singer, including Ngay Em Den (The Day You Come), Song Ve Dau (Where Are Waves Going?) and Bai Ca Khong Quen (An Unforgettable Song).
"I organised the concert to express my gratitude to fans and colleagues who love my voice and have supported me in the past 30 years," Van said.
She will sing some songs along with her husband, drummer Khac Trieu.
Van is among few singers to achieve fame from pop in the early years of national reunification in HCM City. She took part in the first city art festival in 1979 while she was an employee of Saigontourist.
"I received warm applause from the audience, and I started my singing career then," Van said.
With her charm on stage, Van had big hits with Bai Ca Khong Quen, Ha Noi Mua Vang Nhung Con Mua (Ha Noi in a Season Without Rain) and Dem Dong (Winter Night).
She never received any professional training. "I decided to sing as I always have, so the audiences would accept me and wouldn't think that I was trying to imitate other singers," she said.
Van has been awarded many medals including the Gold Medal at HCM City's Singing Festivals organised in 1983 and 1985. She carried off a Special Prize at the 1986 International Singing Festival in Germany, and a Gold Medal at the Asian Music Festival in North Korea in 1989. She has performed at concerts in foreign countries including the US, France and Australia.
Van invites 200 fans and her friends to the free concert. The concert will begin at 8pm Sunday at White Palace in Tan Binh District. — VNS
