Can Tho landslide wreaks havoc
HCM CITY — A landslide that occurred last Saturday morning in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Can Tho killed two people and swept four houses into a river.
Dang Thi Thu, 49, of Phong Dien Town, was killed along with her five-year-old grandson, Nguyen Dinh Tri, as she tried to save the sleeping boy when their house began to sink into the Can Tho River.
The landslide, the third since last month, also destroyed part of the Tra Nien Bridge, which links the town with the district of Ninh Kieu, cutting off traffic to the town.
27 polluters shamed by zone authority
HCM CITY — The HCM City Export Processing and Industrial Zone Authority has made public the names of 27 enterprises that caused serious pollution last year.
The enterprises violated regulations on environmental protection, including discharging untreated waste water, smoke, and more effluents than permitted, violating regulations on transporting and treating radioactive and toxic waste, and exploiting underground water without permission. — VNS
