More sponsors, focus seen as key to improving sport

HA NOI — Vietnamese sport will received more support to get more success this year, according to the Viet Nam Olympic Committee in an annual meeting recently.

Plans have been being discussed to develop sports based on the country's achievements last year.

Viet Nam took part and competed successfully in more than 10 international events under the lead of the committee co-ordinating with the National Sports Administration and federations.

The committee has worked with the International Olympic Committee, Olympic Council of Asia and other sport organisations to effectively widen its activities related to the third Asian Indoor Games as well as to carry out plans this year.

Attending the meeting, representatives of sports departments expounded their opinions on strengthening Viet Nam sports.

Committee vice chairman and general secretary Hoang Vinh Giang raised some of the negatives about this year's largest sporting tournament, the National Sports Games.

He said that there were too many events with sets of medals. Instead the event should be divided into several smaller games, with divisions for elite sport and amateur sport for youths.

"We need to be more focused on the events in which we strategically can get results in. This rule was successfully applied in the first Asian Martial Arts Games, third AIG and 25th Southeast Asian Games. This international ruling will restrict nations or provinces and cities from winning large numbers of medals in which they hold the upper hand, creating chances for other countries or provinces and cities to have certain results," Giang added.

In order to create conditions for athletes to have more chances to improve their skills, the committee will continue to find more sponsors.

The committee will ask the Government's permission to organise some regional and continental tournaments, including the 27th Southeast Asian Games in 2013, fourth Asian Beach Games in 2016, 18th Asian Sport Games in 2019 and Indoor-Martial Arts Games in 2018. — VNS
