HA NOI — The National Age Groups Swimming and Diving Championship will kick off in central Da Nang City next week.

The annual championship, sponsored by VietinBank, will see nearly 300 junior athletes from 23 cities and provinces.

Swimmers compete in three age groups – under 12, 13-14 and 15-17 from May 5-7.

At a press conference in Ha Noi on Thursday, the Viet Nam Aquatic Sports Association (VASA) said a diving tournament would take place on May 8-10 in under 12 and 15-17 groups.

Junior swimmers and divers will compete for 156 sets of medals in both individual and team events.

"The tourney will be a key test to select members for the national teams for a regional tournament," said VASA's general secretary Dinh Viet Hung.

Hung said he expected a number of national records to be broken.

"They have made great progress in both training and competing. They are potential candidates to replace their seniors in the near future," he said.
