HCM CITY — Top tennis stars are giving lessons to children aged eight to 18 at a Tennis Summer Camp that began in Binh Duong New City on Monday.

Veteran Tran Duc Quynh and top national male and female players Do Minh Quan and Nguyen Thuy Dung are part of the first camp of its kind in Viet Nam.

Quynh said participants would receive both basic and advanced lessons and taught how to play tennis smartly.

The top trainees would have a chance to go to the Joel Ross Tennis and Sports Camp in the US next year, he added.

The 12-day class is costing each participant VND20 million (US$1,000).

Top female Vietnamese tennis player Dung, 24, plans to open a tennis academy in Ha Noi in the near future.

"I'm planning to set up an academy in Ha Noi in the next few years. However, my family and I are still looking for partners to make the dream a reality," she said.

Elite Vietnamese tennis players often seek training courses at famous tennis academies abroad, where they find favourable conditions to bring them to the professional level, she added. They have to go abroad because Viet Nam has not made sufficient investment in the sport.

The Hanoian has studied tennis for years in the US and Thailand to hone her skills. She believes her experiences will help her manage an academy in Viet Nam. — VNS
