HA NOI — World No 4 Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark will visit Viet Nam to compete with local top seed Nguyen Tien Minh in a friendly match on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The 35-year-old Gade has made his mark in badminton history through his All England Open Badminton Championships singles title in 1999 and his four European Championships crowns in the men's single event.
The Dane topped the world rankings from 1998 to 2001. With his 16 Grand-Prix titles, he has become one of the most successful players of all time. Into his 30s, Gade remains active on the international circuit. On June 22, 2006, he briefly recaptured the No 1 spot in the world rankings after winning the Singapore Open and reaching the quarter-final at the Malaysia Open.
The Olympian Minh, who is ranked seventh in the world and has won gold medals at the SCG Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold and at the Yonex Chinese Taipei Gold Grand Prix in 2009, has met Gade six times before but never overcome the Dane.
The match will be held in HCM City on November 30. Tickets are sold at the Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium, No 8, Vo Van Tan Street, District 3 and EEC Company at 77 Ly Chinh Thang Street, District 3. — VNS
