National squad gathers for AFF tourney

 

The Vietnamese futsal squad have resumed training to prepare for the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal championships after returning from the Asian futsal qualification.

The team, which earned a ticket to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Championships 2010 finals in Taskent, Uzbekistan next May, will train in the Thanh Long Sports Centre until the 2010 AFF Futsal Championships opens in HCM City on April 5.

Head coach Sergio Gargelli also called up more three players, including Ha Bao Minh, Nguyen Trong Thien and Le The Cuong.

Besides the host team Viet Nam, the tournament includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Myanmar teams but is without defending champion Thailand.

Teams will compete in the round robin format, with the two top teams entering the final.

In the championships last year Viet Nam finished second for the first time, only losing to Thailand in the final.

Lim sacked as Ninh Binh coach

Singapore's Robert Lim was the first coach to be fired from the V-League.

Lim, who worked for Ninh Binh, lost his job after only four games of the season. Now the coach will work with the club's younger team.

Under Lim, Ninh Binh won one game, drew two and lost one. They are currently in 10th place with five points.

The new head coach of the team is said to be Brazilian, but his name has yet to be revealed. He has not arrived in Viet Nam for personal reasons.

During the interim period, the club will be under the supervision of the coaching assistants, Nguyen Duc Canh and Pham Nhu Thuan.

Viet Anh leaves for IAAF scholarship

Duong Thi Viet Anh left for Beijing yesterday to attend a six-month training course at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF)‘s High Performance Training Centre.

The Vietnamese high jumper, who won a bronze medal at the Southeast Asian Games last December, received an IAAF scholarship.

The course will start today and Viet Anh will be coached by experienced experts at the IAAF.

Nguyen Thi Lan had also received a similar scholarship for pole vaulting. — VNS
