Vietnamese swimmers set records
With outstanding performances, Vietnamese swimmers won three golds, two silvers, four bronzes and broke two records in the first day of competition at the 34th Southeast Asian (SEA) Age Groups Swimming Championships in Los Banos, Laguna in the Philippines on Thursday.
The first two gold medals went to Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen in the girls' 15-17 years old 100m butterfly in a time of 1:02.09 and in the girls' 200m mixed event in 2:21.83, new records in both disciplines.
Tuyen also won a silver in 100m backstroke in 1:05.94.
Tran Duy Khoi brought home the third gold medal in the boys' U12 100m backstroke with at time of 1:05.42. Khoi went on to collect a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle and a silver in the 200m mixed event,
The rest of Viet Nam's medals went to Phan Le Hong Hanh in the girls' 13-14 years old 100m backstroke, Ho Nhat Song Vy in the girls' 13-14 years old 200m mixed event and Lam Quang Nhat in the boys' U12 400m freestyle.
Biggest leather ball showcased
The largest ball ever to be made in Viet Nam has been unveiled at the De Nhat Phan Khang shopping centre in HCM City.
The ball, which is 6.41m in diameter and weighs 534kg, took 45 days to complete. It has been officially recognised by Viet Nam's Guinness Records Centre as the largest leather ball in the country.
It was made on the initiative of the shopping centre's staff who wanted to show international friends how much the Vietnamese people love football on the occasion of 2010 World Cup which begins on June 11.
Athletics coaches to train in Germany
Athletics coach Nguyen Dang Truong of the Ministry of Public Security and Le Cong Huu of Binh Duong will start a 13-month coaching course in Germany next Wednesday after being chosen by German athletics expert, Dr Uwe Freimuth, and the Viet Nam Athletics Federation
The course is a result of an athletics development co-operation programme between the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Wrestlers warm-up at Guangzhou
A Pre-Asian Games Wrestling Tournament will be held in Guangzhou, China from July 31 to August 2.
The organisers announced 66 men and 48 women will wrestle in three categories ranging from 48kg to 58kg for women and 56kg to 77kg for men at the Dongguan Gymnasium. — VNS
