Grandmaster Liem hits 42nd in world ranking

HCM CITY — Grand Master Le Quang Liem's victory at the prestigious Aeroflot Open in Moscow has propelled him 51 spots higher in the World Chess Federation's March ranking.

With an Elo rating of 2689, Viet Nam's top player is now in 42nd place, the highest point to which a Vietnamese player has ever achieved.

Magnus Carlsen of Norway is the world's top-ranked player with a rating of 2813.

The prestigious Aeroflot Open featured 75 grandmasters and five international masters.

Liem, 19, from HCM City was also the first Vietnamese player to enter the top 100. — VNS
