HA NOI — The Central Natural Disaster Relief Fund is planning to build flood-proof houses and plant mangroves forests and forestry on sandy areas as part of its support for 14 central coastal provinces from Thanh Hoa to Binh Thuan.

The fund has collected VND14 billion (US$737,000) in the first quarter of this year which it would use to build 30 flood-resistance houses this year and help minimise damage in the worst flood-hit areas across the central region.

Fund management board president Phan Dien said the fund depended on donations from local and foreign enterprises and non-governmental organisations for the VND20 billion ($1.05 million) restoration of 200ha of mangrove forests in Hau Loc District in Thanh Hoa Province, and further funds for the planting of forest in sand in Quang Ninh District in Quang Binh Province from now until 2015.

Fund official would also help local authorities offer training courses in prevention and coping with natural disasters and climate change.

The fund is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation. Last year, it raised VND14.7 billion ($773,600) and built community houses, health clinics and flood-safe classrooms in Quang Nam, Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Thua Thien Hue provinces and Da Nang City.

The fund also held training courses in flood prevention for 200 officials from Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai and Phu Yen provinces. — VNS
