THAI NGUYEN — President Nguyen Minh Triet wants northern Thai Nguyen Province to become a major metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing and precision engineering hub.
"Viet Nam's mechanical engineering remains undeveloped and that is why we should mobilise domestic and international resources to make metallurgy a vital industry for Thai Nguyen and the nation," he told provincial officials.
The president praised the economic achievements of the province's citizens during a visit earlier this week.
"The growth rate of 9.1 per cent for gross domestic product in 2009 was an encouraging achievement when measured against the world economic downturn and its impact on the country," he said.
"It was testimony to the Party and Government's correct leadership and the stuff and wisdom of the Vietnamese people in overcoming difficulties and challenges."
The president also praised the province's development of their society, culture, education and health care and their contribution to national security and defence.
Congresses
The president advised the provincial officials to prepare carefully for the Viet Nam Communist Party's provincial, district and communal congresses and ensure they were truly democratic.
"Decisions adopted at the congresses will be the corner stone for the rapid and sustainable economic development in the province," he emphasised.
He also asked the provincial administrators to give agriculture and rural development proper attention and improve the farmers' living conditions, particularly those of minority people.
The president, who chairs the Judicial Reform Steering Committee, said he appreciated the progress of provincial judicial reform.
Politburo Resolution No 49-NQ/TU, which defined the country's strategy for judicial reform by 2020, confirmed the determination to make Viet Nam a Socialist State ruled by law, he said.
But every citizen had to obey the law, especially those who work in judicial agencies, if that goal was to be achieved.
New port
President Nguyen Minh Triet pressed the button to launch construction of the VND260 billion, about US$14.4 million, port named Da Phuc during his two-day visit that ended yesterday.
The project on 10ha is expected to accelerate economic development in Thai Nguyen and other northern midland and highland provinces after it is completed at the end of the year.
The President also visited Military Region 1 Command which has responsibility for the region and the 500-km border with China.
Military Region 1 soldiers also help remote minority people improve their livelihoods.
The President also paid tribute and burnt incense for Young Volunteers Martyrs of Company 915 who died in Thai Nguyen in the air war against the Americans on December 24,1972. — VNS
