US human rights abuse allegations rejected

HA NOI — Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga has rejected US State Department accusations of human rights abuses in Viet Nam.

"The US Department of State's Human Rights Reports 2009 once again made partial remarks based on untrue information about the real situation in Viet Nam, " she said.

Viet Nam's consistent policy was to respect and ensure human rights.

The country had posted great achievements to ensure human rights in all fields from the civil, political and economic to the cultural and social, during the recent past.

The spokeswoman emphasised that the Vietnamese people were the beneficiaries of these achievements and clearly understood the fact.

The international community also acknowledged and lauded the achievements.

The spokeswoman, who was answering reporter questions, said Viet Nam had always been willing to co-operate and talk with nations and international organisations, including the US, to increase mutual understanding about differences, including those about human rights.

The State Department's accusations were in its Human Rights Report 2009 published on Thursday, March 11. — VNS
