HA NOI — The success of the August Revolution on September 2, 1945, not only marked the birth of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, but also provided four valuable lessons for the Vietnamese people, President Nguyen Minh Triet said yesterday.
The President was addressing a meeting of leading officials in Ha Noi to mark the 65th anniversary of the event. They included Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, President of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee Huynh Dam and many other senior Party, Government and army officials.
Triet said the first lesson learned was "holding high the flag of national independence and socialism". He said a firm foundation was vital for the pursuit of socialism.

The second lesson was that revolution was the cause of the people, for the people and by the people. "It is the people who have made the glorious history of our nation," he said. "The strength of the Party is a close bond between it and the people, like blood and flesh."
The third lesson was the need for constant consolidation and unity between the Party, the nation and the people of the world. He said solidarity was a precious tradition and the mighty strength behind the Vietnamese revolution.
And finally, Triet said, the leadership of the Party was the decisive factor in the victory of the Vietnamese revolution.
President Triet said that on September 2, 1945, at the Ba Dinh Square, President Ho Chi Minh declared to the world the birth of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam (DRVN), now the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
He said the date was a great milestone in the country's historical development and opened up a glorious page in nation building.
"The 1945 August Revolution and the birth of the DRVN were a victory of intellect and the fighting spirit of the Vietnamese people under the leadership of the Communist Party led by President Ho," said Triet.
The rebirth of the nation followed revolutions in the 15 years after the inception of the Party.
The President said the renewal process initiated by the Party at the sixth National Party Congress in 1986 was a response to the urgent needs of the nation.
"The Party, Government and people were pro-actively looking for measures to lift the nation to a higher plane," he said.
"The political platform developed during the transitional period towards socialism was adopted at the seventh National Party Congress in 1991. It was a positive step in the Party's awareness.
"Achievements over the last 65 years have demonstrated the maturity of the Party, Government and people of Viet Nam."
Triet called on the Party, the armed forces and people to exert further efforts to build a socialist State ruled by law and meeting the national requirements of industrialisation and modernisation.
"We have to make the Party pure and strong and turn the State into one of the people, for the people and by the people," said Triet.
He said to continue the path of the August Revolution, it was imperative for the Vietnamese nation to firmly defend its national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.
President Triet called on the entire people and the armed forces as well as overseas Vietnamese to join efforts to ensure the success of the renewal process.
Earlier in the day, a delegation of officials from the Party Central Committee, the President, National Assembly and the Fatherland Front Central Committee paid a homage to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum.
The delegation also placed wreaths at the memorial to war martyrs.
