Viet Nam supports UN efforts in Syria

NEW YORK – Viet Nam supports moves made by the international community, including the Arab League, to restore stability and hold talks that focus on national reconciliation and peace in Syria.

"Vietnam has been closely following developments in Syria and we are particularly concerned by reports of increasing violence, instability and the loss of public order in the country, which seriously affects the Syrian people's rights", said Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, Vietnam's Permanent Representative to the UN, during a bid by the United Nations to adopt a resolution on current events.

Trung said Vietnam supports the international community's call to all parties concerned about Syria to exercise self-restraint, end violence and find a political solution through constructive dialogue and national reconciliation, which is what the Syrian people desire.

The Ambassador stated that Vietnam supports the position held by many countries, while respecting the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. The principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, as well as the peaceful settlement of conflicts and a guarantee of the right to self-determination of the Syrian people is paramount and therefore must be determined by the Syrian people themselves.
