Viet Nam assists Laos to organise ninth ASEM meeting

HA NOI — Viet Nam is committed the supporting Laos to organise the ninth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM-9) scheduled for the Laotian capital of Vientiane in November.

The commitment was made by Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh at a meeting yesterday with Lao Deputy Foreign Minister Bounket Sansomsak, who is currently on a three-day visit to Viet Nam.

Minh expressed his delight at the progress being made in the two countries' bilateral relationship and noted the importance of holding the Viet Nam-Laos friendship and solidarity year in 2012.

Other ASEM member countries are preparing for the ASEM Senior Officials' meeting to be held in Denmark in March to discuss preparations for ASEM-9. After 15 years of development, ASEM is an important inter-regional forum with 48 members, representing 60 per cent of the world's population and contributing to 55 percent of the global GDP.— VNS

Delegates at the 11th National Party Congress yesterday voted to elect members for the 11th Party Central Committee, which will consist of 175 official and 25 alternate members.
As many as 175 official and 25 alternate members will be elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) for the 11th tenure.
