Tributes paid to senior Buddhist

HA NOI — People from all walks of life yesterday paid tribute to Most Venerable Thich Thanh Tu, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha's Executive Council, at the Quan Su Pagoda – the headquarters of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Ha Noi.

Most Venerable Thich Thanh Tu (real name Tran Van Long) passed away on November 26 at the age of 85.

Delegations from the Party Central Committee, the Presidential Office and the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee came to express their respect for the senior Buddhist dignitary.

The delegation of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat was headed by Ngo Van Du, politburo member, Party Central Committee Secretary, Chairman of the Inspection Commission, while the Presidential Office delegation was headed by Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, and the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee headed by Deputy President and General Secretary Vu Trong Kim.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and VFF Central Committee's President Huynh Dam sent their floral tribute.

Delegations from ministries, sectors, organisations and localities, as well as monks, nuns and Buddhist followers across the country came in person or sent wreaths to Quan Su Pagoda.

A commemorative ceremony for the Most Venerable will be held tomorrow and he will rest at the stupa at the Viet Nam Buddhist Institute in Ha Noi's outlying Soc Son District. — VNS
